AB&I starts new growth and development program

AB&I began a new two year Growth and Development Program on August 16thas part of their Succession Plan to develop future leaders at AB&I. In the next 3-5 years, approximately 1/3 of AB&I’s workforce will be eligible for retirement. To prepare for the future, they have developed a program called “Growth and Development” to establish a talent pool to draw from as key team members retire.
The training matrix is comprised of soft skill subjects such as communications and managing conflict. The sessions are held in-house during work hours and most of the classes will be taught by instructors from Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. Some of the classes will also be taught or complimented by in-house subject matter experts. The core classes will be the same for everyone, but custom classes will also be available.
The three groups in training will be managers, supervisors and leadmen. The first session for managers and supervisors was held on August 16th and included high impact leadership and basic supervision training. The leadmen had their first training session on preparing for increased responsibilities on August 23rd.
The second sessions on communication were held on September 13th. The instructor, Rae Ann, delivered a very engaging class using material that is applicable to AB&I. She held several exercises demonstrating how we walk around with a hierarchy of where we fit in the organization and how we behave without even thinking about it. The exercise was aimed at helping participants think about how they come across to others both in what they say and how they are perceived.
Some of the feedback from the first two sessions was, Thank you for the opportunity to take supervisory classes”; “I like them a lot and have learned a lot”; “I am very grateful for the opportunity”; and “the instructor is awesome and explains things well”. We also received suggested topics for future training.
This training is designed to build a platform of knowledge across levels and build confidence and a stronger understanding of the soft skill responsibilities needed for particular jobs. Continuous training will help team members develop and hold a position as an effective leader and make AB&I even stronger as a competitor within the industry. It also insures that team members have a consistent experience and background knowledge.
